The world isn’t going to be changed by our average style of Christianity. It is going to be changed by the presence of true disciples of our Lord.  John Wesley wrote, “If I had 300 men who feared nothing but God, hated nothing but sin, and determined to know nothing among men but Christ, and Him crucified I would set the world on fire.”  According to John the apostle, a disciple is someone:

1.     Who Continues in the Word

John 8:31:  Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;”

2.     Who Demonstrates Christ’s Love

John 13:35:  “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

3.  Who Bears Much Fruit

John 15:8:  “Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

Of course, we all realize, I’m sure, that it all begins with the New Birth

John 3:3-7:  “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old?  can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee,  Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.  Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.”

Our Lord never put discipleship in fine print in the contract.  He calls on us to forsake all, to deny self  and to love Him more than anything  else.  We are not our own, we are bought with a price (I Corinthians 6:19-20).  We are the personal property of Jesus Christ with no right to anything.  Love  so amazing,  so  divine,  demands  my  soul,  my  life,  my  all.

1.  A Disciple has the Right Priorities:

Jesus first, He is above all.

2.  A Disciple has the Right Perspective:

He counts the cost

Luke 14:33,  So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

3.  A Disciple has the Right Purpose:

            To be salt

          To be consistent

Luke 14:33-34,  “So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

What accounts for your drive for Christ?

You have a work to do, laid out for you in the secret counsels of eternity; no other can do it.  If you neglect it, it is not true that some other will do it; it will remain undone.  If  you know your heart today, you should rather die than not be used by God in building up His Kingdom.

Another word that begins with “d” is likened unto disciple and that word is discipline and it isn’t a very popular word.   The lack of it turns students into fools, children into culprits, athletes into losers, and a garden into weed patches.

One thing that is very clear about Jesus is that He knew He had been sent.  An awareness of a purpose and a mission should be obvious as being the sons of our Father.
